December 2024 Updates!
Youth Engagement Sessions
Senior Youth Worker Liz has been leading an incredible project with around 65 students from All Saints, Warren School and Marks Gate Youth group over the past three months. These dedicated young individuals have been at the heart of developing the name, logo, and marketing ideas to ensure the new Youth Centre truly reflects and empowers its community.
Here's what they've been up to:
- Fortnightly Youth Group Sessions: Students have been actively participating in sessions where they've been designing, discussing, and presenting their ideas. These sessions are not just about brainstorming; they're about making real decisions that will shape the new Youth Centre.
- Collaborative Efforts: The students have been presenting their concepts to each other and their year groups (through google classroom, assemblies and form presentations; co-designing various elements of the centre. This collaborative approach ensures that the new Youth Centre meets the diverse needs and interests of its future members.
- Active Participation in building developments: The youth groups have been closely following the site developments, to enable their input on future decisions. We are working closely with Etec and RCKa to co-produce as many elements of the new youth centre as we can; making sure the centre is built with their experiences and aspirations in mind.
- Widespread Engagement: Over 150 young people, across schools and the community, have already been part of the decision-making process. Through a democratic and inclusive approach, the initial list of 8 potential names for the Youth Centre was narrowed down to 4. Now, the excitement continues as the shortlisted names are being shared borough-wide through a questionnaire, inviting even more young people to have their say.
- Summer session with VCFS Organizations: Young people from Urban Promise UK and Marks Gate Boxing are now involved in the project; with specific youth engagement work taking place with Urban Promise this August. These sessions will focus on marketing; how we can build anticipation and excitement for the new youth centre within the community and have young people leading our outreach efforts.
- Having seen a video of the stripped back site, here is what some of the young people taking part in the youth engagement sessions a had to say about the site!
- 'It looks bigger than I thought. It's really spacious! A lot of young people will be able to go there and have a space to have fun and meet other young people.
- 'We could use the big room for sports'
- 'I'd like an arts and crafts space on the right'.
Work Experience with RCKA
We are thrilled to celebrate the achievements of students who participated in work experience with RCKa Architects as part of our Padnall Hall Youth Engagement programme. Students spent 4 days focusing on spatial design within the new Youth centre. The group explored different considerations and aspects to the design of space; what makes a ‘good’ or ‘bad’ space both personally and as architects and designers. They used VR walkthroughs to analyze the scale and character of Padnall Hall, attended workshops on converting 1:100 plans to 1:1 scale, and built scaled models. Students brainstormed potential interventions in the arrival space at Padnall Hall and began their design work. The students even practiced conventional orthographic drawing and presented their design proposals at a 'design review,' showcasing their process and reasoning to RCKa’s expert panel and Director.
The design ideas will now be shared with building contractors Etec Group and hopefully incorporated into the new build. The young people will also be joining a session with their Year 10 peers around careers and opportunities across construction and architecture industries.
Here is what some of the young people taking part in the work experience with RCKa had to say about the project!
'I feel like it's good for the area and that there is money being invested in us. It gives me hope that there is development happening, I'm glad to hear that.'
'Padnall Hall as a Youth centre will widen and help the community. Like your neighbors can become your family and come to a space. It will give children from less wealthy backgrounds a chance to talk to others, experience new things and enjoy activities after school. it might even reduce knife crime and mean less young people socialize with the wrong people.'
'Young people will feel at home at this youth centre'
'I feel like this youth centre will allow the community to come together and socialize in a safe space. To talk with each other and support each other; to meet and have a friendly conversation.'
Over 150 young people, across schools and the community, have already been part of the decision-making process. Students from All Saints, Warren School and Marks Gate Youth group and the wider community have been engaged with over the past 8 months. Young people have been actively participating in sessions where they've been designing, discussing, and presenting their ideas; making real decisions that will shape the new Youth Centre including the name and logo!
Shout out to our logo winner and runners up! We are so impressed by the talent and creativity of all the young people who took part in the competition. The winning artist and runners up all received vouchers for their star creations and the winning logo will now be professionally mocked up by designers and architects and feature on and within the building when it opens in April 2025.
