Local organisation Reconnections had to move its befriending service from face to face to phone only. Over 20 local volunteers signed up to online training, so they could help. Older people get a weekly call from someone for around an hour. When restrictions allow, volunteer and old person will be able to meet face to face, Find out more about their work: https://www.independentage.org/reconnections

In Barking, the community has reacted to the crisis really well. The organisations and food banks have come together and are helping each other and I have been involved with that. I am really happy to help neighbours and also clap for the NHS but it’s not just about that. It has brought people closer together. The doors of communication have been opened. The cohesion and collaboration and togetherness between groups have improved even over the phone and video calls. Read more here: https://bdgiving.org.uk/stories/nighat-bhola/

My Neighbour and I have now exchanged numbers, as we both have different age children (my baby is 6 months old) she has offered to get any shopping I need, and as she is a frontline worker her 14 year old daughter is at home alone during the day I have told her to call if there are any issues

The community has reacted well to the crisis overall. I think everybody has drawn from the positives. I’ve got a dog, so I walk the dog regularly and even with practising safe distancing, people are smiling, friendly and approachable. Within passing I can ask, “How are you?”. People wish you good luck and they seem to be positive. I think it’s brought the community together. Read more about Darren's story here: https://bdgiving.org.uk/stories/darren-maun/

I am very proud of my community and how it has reacted to the crisis. I’ve seen so many acts of kindness in the past few months that I haven’t seen before. The best bit has been seeing young people in a completely different light as they are being so great with others even if they were not this way before. It is this new vibe of ‘I will help you’, I appreciate the most. Read more about this story here: https://bdgiving.org.uk/stories/gabija-cepelyte/
