Neighbourhood Watch

Neighbourhood Watch is run by volunteers in the community, working with local residents to support individuals and groups to create safer, stronger, and active communities. Neighbourhood Watch believe in community, a caring society that is focused on trust and respect, in which people are safe from crime and enjoy a good quality of life. Neighbourhood Watch help people feel less afraid, vulnerable, or isolated in the place where they live.

Local Neighbourhood Watch schemes work in a variety of ways that reflect the needs of the local community. This includes, sharing crime prevention advice and information, running awareness campaigns, connecting with local watches, holding social events and awards for local people and businesses, leading community projects, such as litter picks, presentations in schools and work with young people and children and community messaging with the police. The London Borough of Barking and Dagenham have recently relaunched Neighbourhood Watch so are building the foundations to achieve the aspirations and need local community members to support building an effective, community led Neighbourhood Watch programme.


The vision

Neighbourhood Watch vision is a society where neighbours come together to create safer, stronger and active communities. Through connecting local residents we aim to build a strong community cohesion working together to aim to improve safety within Barking and Dagenham.


The mission

Neighbourhood Watch mission is to support and enable individuals and communities to be connected, active and safe, which increases wellbeing and minimises crime.


The values

In all Neighbourhood Watch work and relationships, Neighbourhood Watch will be relevant, accountable and inclusive and aim to achieve the following.

  • Neighbourly - We aspire to be good neighbours.
  • Community focused - We bring people together.
  • Inclusive - We are welcoming to all people.
  • Proactive - We are active within communities and we are relevant in today’s world.
  • Trusted - We are dependable, caring, respectable, approachable, and supportive.
  • Collaborative - We work as a team, in partnerships and within communities.



Support campaigns

Neighbourhood Watch regularly run national online crime prevention and community cohesion campaigns. One of the many ways you can get involved is by following the social media channels and promoting campaigns within your local communities. The more people that can be reached, the safer communities can be. Supporting national campaigns is not a requirement of Neighbourhood Watch, residents can decide their own level of involvement within Neighbourhood Watch activity.

Become a member

People join Neighbourhood Watch for many different reasons, whether it is to improve safety around their home or to become part of a group and meet new people. You can decide how little or how much you support your local watches, every minute supporting Neighbourhood Watch can go a long way to;

  • Reducing / preventing local crime and disorder
  • Reducing fear of crime
  • Addressing issues relating to antisocial behaviour
  • Creating safer neighbourhoods
  • Building community spirit and cohesion
  • Reassuring members of the public
  • Enhancing partnership working with other community groups
  • Assisting in the detection and apprehension of criminals through members providing information to the police
  • Improving quality of life and the local environment
