Help us to enhance the heritage of Barking Town Centre
In October 2020 the Council agreed to changes to the Abbey and Barking Town Centre Conservation area.
The conservation area exists to protect the heritage and character of the town centre. It means that any changes that take place must conserve, respect or contribute to the area's special qualities and appearance.
Our changes:
- altered the boundary to include new buildings and spaces which add to the area’s special character and remove those which no longer contribute to the conservation area; and
- updated the management plan, which sets out the vision for the future of the conservation area and is the framework to guide change. It aims to to preserve what is special, enhance it through considered change, and promote awareness and shared responsibility for looking after the conservation area.
Our long-term objectives are to phase out ill-considered change and additions and ensure new development or alterations are of high quality and respond to the special character of the conservation area.
