Central Park Improvement Project

Going to the park can improve mental and physical health for all ages. We're making changes to some of the borough's parks and green spaces to make them more accessible, safe, and fun for everyone.

What improvements are planned for Central Park?

  • biodiversity enhancements such as significant native tree and wildflower planting;
  • new park facilities comprising a toddler playground, an adventure playground zone, an ‘events amphitheatre; and
  • improvements to the footpath network to provide improved access and remove barriers.

For further information about these changes, check out the "Find out more" tab to your right, or watch the video.

LATEST INFORMATION

We are on to the next phase of installing a brand new Junior Adventure Play Area!

We asked local residents to help us decide on the final design, the different elements of the play equipment you want included, and what colour you wanted the new play equipment to be.

Have a look at the current design below.

The new children's play area is set to be installed in Spring/Summer 2024.

You decided and we delivered. Thank you for completing the survey, the Toddler play area is now complete

  • The mounds are very high can’t see the children, bit of a trek to walk around the park from Parkside end to where the toddlers park is – will the mound be cleared, and new footpaths be installed?

The existing footpath network will remain, and additional paths will be created as part of the project. The existing/new facilities will still be accessible, and it shouldn’t take any longer to get around the park or access any of the facilities. As is the case in any large outdoor space parents still need to take responsibility for supervising their children.

  • The park is a sore sight to the eye with the construction work, constant dust, noise etc how long is this going to last?

This is a large-scale park transformation scheme which relies on the importation of significant volumes of inert material/soil. The project timescale was always c2 years. So, a level of disruption and inconvenience was inevitably and unavoidable. But we have deliberately delivered the scheme in 4 phases to try and minimise the impact on the park and residents and keep as much of the park open as possible.

  • The mounds? Will they remain there?

Yes, the mounds will remain as they are an integral part of the overall project and the landscaping design (Note: the whole scheme is funded from the income generated from soil importation. So, no mounds = no park/facility improvements).

  • Will there be a lake? Is this safe for the children?

The Central Park Master Plan project doesn’t include the creation of a lake in the park.

  • Where is the exact location for the Junior Play area (near the purple building?)

The Junior Adventurous Play area will be located roughly between the two mounds situated closest to the N-S footpath and the facility will connect to this footpath. So, in this location the play area will be accessible and visible.

  • What is the exact timescale? If there was an option to have it before or after the summer holidays, we would rather choose having it before

Once we have fed back the results of the consultation to Alliance and HAGS we should have a better idea of the overall timescales for ordering the materials and equipment, fabrication, delivery, and installation. We can then decide whether to proceed this year (i.e., winter finish) or delay the works until early 2024 and aim for a spring launch.
