Western Avenue, Healthy Streets

The Western Avenue, Healthy Streets project presents design solutions for creating more harmonious use of the street.

Street Space has delivered a programme of engagement from January to March. This programme has included healthy streets audits, focus groups, door-knocking, on-site pop-ups and online workshops.

By listening to residents, businesses and people who use the street, we have identified 6 key issues:

- quantity of HGVs

- litter & fly-tipping

- speeding vehicles

- visibility of school

- parking during school hours

- anti-social behaviour

Following this, we worked with local people through a collaborative design process to explore how we might make the street a happier, healthier and safer place to be. The proposed design solutions can be seen below.

As part of the delivery phase, detailed designs will be produced, and further engagement will follow to ensure residents are committed to the changes within their street.

The changes outlined in the project timeline on the right will happen in phases to ensure minimal disruption to the street. Take a look to see what you can expect to see in the coming year:

  • 16th April 2022 - Aldborough Alleyway Action
  • Spring 2022 - Rainham Road S Gateway
  • Summer 2022 - School visibility, junctions, speed humps
  • Autumn 2022 - 20 mph zone, time-restricted access for HGV vehicles
  • Winter 2022 - Waste disposal, gate to back road
