Street Naming

Ever wondered how street names get their name?

Street names and numbers are controlled by laws to ensure that properties can be properly located for essential reasons such as postal and emergency services. Some of the laws which control how this is managed date back to 1847!

The choice of street names can help to strengthen local identity and increase civic pride for everyone. The Council encourages the use of street and building names that reinforce local and historical character.

To achieve this, the Council holds an Approved Names List of street names- and it's from this list which most street names are chosen.

We're updating this list, and would like you to have your say.

Take the survey to suggest new themes and names* (This survey will close on 27th June 2025)

*There are some criteria we need to follow:

  1. Inclusion on the Approved Names List does not guarantee future use
  2. The use of a name of a living person will not be approved.
  3. New street names must not duplicate or be similar to an existing name within the borough or neighbouring borough
  4. The use of a name which relates to a deceased person will require very careful consideration in line with the SNN policy. Please note that the person must be deceased for at least 10 years and that written agreement will be required from the next of kin or family.
  5. Any proposed street names that may be considered or construed as obscene, racist or which would contravene any aspect of the Council’s Equal Opportunities policies will not be accepted
