The Stay Well Stay Safe – Healthy Futures Project is a healthy living project ran by the ILA for disabled adults* living in Barking and Dagenham. The project has three objectives: increase physical activity, empower participants with knowledge about healthy lifestyles, and teach participants to cook healthy meals.
The ILA are offering the following activities: a weekly sports group, a monthly swimming group, a weekly Cookery school and a monthly walking group as well as 1-to-1 support to do exercise in the community, such as walking, going to the gym, or doing exercise classes. Have a look at the session dates here .
To sign up for these activities, please contact Ihesinachi Oyouwa Oko-Jaja, the Project Manager for the Stay Well Stay Safe – Healthy Futures Project. You can call her on 02085936677 or email debbierobinson@independentlivingagency.org.
Please feel free to bring personal assistants or any other additional support you may need with you as we cannot provide support with personal care or manual handling.
*“Disabled” covers a wide range of conditions and ability levels: learning disabilities and difficulties, sensory disabilities (eg. Blindness, deafness), physical disabilities (mobility problems, physical health conditions) and mental health conditions.
Volunteering
The ILA are recruiting for the following roles:
Learning Buddy, who helps participants stay focused and engaged during Cookery or Healthy Lifestyles classes, a bit like a teaching assistant but less formal.
Fitness Buddy, who provides an encouraging and supportive voice to help our participants gain confidence to try new sports, exercise classes, swimming, cycling, gym or walking. You are not necessarily teaching them a new skill, but you are taking the isolation and fear out of trying something new. Enthusiastic Fitness Buddies are in demand!
Peer mentor, who undergoes coaching and mentoring training to provide more intensive support to a participant who needs it.
We are offering training for all our volunteers in collaboration with Barking and Dagenham College.
If you are interested in volunteering with us, please fill in the application form here and email it to our Volunteering and Group Development Officer Rosheen at Rosheen@independentlivingagency.org with your availability for an informal interview at the ILA office (or remotely if you can’t travel to us).
