Safe Streets Becontree

The Safe Streets Becontree project was launched in August 2020 in response to the Coronavirus Crisis. With less capacity on public transport and a direct link between air pollution and risks to health - the scheme aims to ensure the safe recovery of our streets and communities as lockdown measures are eased. Throughout the month of August we visited Wren Road, Durrell Road, Haskard Road and Eliot Road to speak with residents about the traffic issues in the area and understand what could be done to make the streets a safer place to live, walk and cycle.

The main issue we found during our engagement was the high speed, cut through traffic on Wren Road and Haskard Road with a high number of residents perceiving this as a significant risk to the safety of residents. We have since designed and implemented a number of traffic calming measures that respond to these issues.

The measures include:

- a 20mph zone within the estate

- speed cushions

- no entry from the eastern end of Haskard Road into Parsloes Avenue, except for cycles

We are now monitoring the impact of these measures. If they are successful, they will remain, if not they will be adapted, improved or removed. To help us do this, please fill in the below survey and let us know your views on how the traffic calming measures have affected the area.
