The London Borough of Barking and Dagenham have conducted a survey to understand where women feel unsafe within the borough, along with local data and youth surveys this information will help inform the roll out of the Safe Haven Scheme.
Safe Haven is a campaign that offers residents and those visiting the borough a safe space to approach if they feel they are in danger, threatened or harassed, vulnerable or unwell. Safe Havens will be delivered through local businesses and located in public premises such as shops, cafes, pubs, libraries, and other places of interest.
The support a Safe Haven can provide will include the following.
Letting people inside and keeping out those who are threatening them
Giving the individual a space to feel safe
Calling an emergency service, friend, or family member
Or by simply by giving directions or information on public transport
All premises that are signed up to the scheme will be listed on a Safe Haven register which will be available on the council website. Each business once signed up will be provided with a Safe Haven promotional sticker that will be displayed in their business window to allow residents to identify a Safe Haven.
In Case of Emergency (ICE) cards will be available to downloaded from the council website or can be collected from local council buildings for all communities within the Borough. The ICE card will contain the individuals name and contact details for someone who can be contacted if the individual requires help.
The women’s safety survey had over 2,500 visitors to the page and 282 people engaged with the survey, 84 anonymous submissions and 408 pins added to the map. The survey highlighted a number of hotspot areas where women feel unsafe,

The main reason for people feeling unsafe were;
People hanging around
Drug and alcohol use
Poor/no lighting
We are now seeking input from residents on the types of premises, days, and times of the week that Safe Havens could be most beneficial.
The closing date for responses is Monday 21st June 2021.
