Help Marsh Green Primary School children get to school safely

3 May 2023: Please refer to the latest update below

Marsh Green Primary School has issues with congestion at pick-up and drop-off times.

To reduce danger to the pupils and relieve congestion outside the school gates, we are proposing that North Close and South Close, both become School Streets at pick-up and drop-off times.

This will create a pedestrian and cycle-only area in front of the school gate between the hours of 8am - 9:15am, and 2.45pm - 4pm during term time. This will alleviate congestion and parking problems for residents and create a safer environment for children and parents to travel to school.

Emergency vehicles will be exempt. Residents and businesses within the school street zone, carers and blue badge holders who require access to the school street, as well as school staff (where the staff car park is within the school street zone), can apply for an exemption free of charge. Residents’ parking will be unaffected.

Tell us what you think

  • You can hear what parents and residents at other local School Streets say about their existing School Streets.
  • Respond to our survey and share your views.
  • Check out the interactive map below to view the proposal.
  • Take a look at our commonly asked questions and, if you don't see the information you are looking for, post your question below on the 'questions' tab, and we will respond to you as soon as possible.

  • Marsh Green Primary School Streets to go live in June 2023

School Streets will be introduced at Marsh Green Primary School to reduce traffic and improve road safety.

The School Streets will mean that North Close and South Close, become pedestrian and cycle-only zones from 8am to 9.15am and 2.45pm to 4pm during term time.

The aim is to transform the busy, congested and polluted roads outside the school gate into safer, healthier and more pleasant environments, and to reduce the nuisance caused to local residents during the school run.

Residents and businesses within the school street zone, carers and blue badge holders who require access to the school streets, can apply for an exemption free of charge.

In response to feedback received during the consultation, the single yellow lines at the top of North Close will be converted to double yellow lines making it an offence for vehicles to park in this area. This should reduce the amount of vehicles parking across the pavement of Whitebarn Lane and North Close and making the area safer for all pedestrians. These changes can be seen in the Marsh Green School Streets design in the Important documents section.

The council is also working with children and parents to encourage walking, cycling and scooting to school. The council is asking for the support from parents and residents so everyone in the area can enjoy the benefits of quieter, safer roads.

Cameras and signs will be installed in May, ready to go live in June.

    Who is exempt?

No vehicles will be allowed into the school street zone during operating hours unless they have an exemption. Emergency services vehicles are automatically exempt.

You can apply for an exemption only if:

    • you are a resident living within the School Street zone, or if you run a business within the zone
    • you are a blue badge holder who requires immediate and regular access to the school
    • you are a carer of a resident living within the zone, or you are a carer of a disabled or SEN child attending the school who needs to be dropped outside the school entrance.

  • Update and thank you!

We would like to thank everyone who gave feedback on the Marsh Green School Street proposals. The School Street will be going live from June 2023.

The results were positive and in June we expect to move forward with the plans on an experimental basis.

We are writing to everyone in the School Street zone with full details of the next steps. Until then, no need to do anything. The roads remain open as usual and there is no need to apply for exemptions yet.

Thank you again for your feedback.
