Leftley Estate Vehicle Restriction Consultation

UPDATE: Consultation Outcome

The Leftley Estate Vehicle Restriction Consultation request on Rat Running Traffic proposals was sent out to all properties within the area in late January 2024. This was followed up with a reminder in early March to maximise the community feedback opportunities.

We sought feedback on the following:

As part of our ongoing commitment to promoting healthy active travel and road safety, we were considering options to reduce the volume of through traffic at peak times (7:00am – 10:00am, Monday to Friday).

One option under consideration is to ban access for all motor vehicles from Longbridge Road into the residential streets listed below:

  • Westrow Drive
  • Sudbury Road
  • Stratton Drive

The information and feedback from the community is extremely valuable. We engaged with approximately 3000 properties and received 546 responses via the One Borough Voice web page, and direct email responses to myself.

We have now collated and assessed responses. Of the 546 responses received:

400 Rejected the Proposal 73.3%

146 Supported the Proposal 26.7%

With the community feedback overwhelmingly not supporting these proposals, we will not pursue them further.

Naturally aware of the communities’ continuing concerns, other targeted traffic calming road safety measures will be considered in the future to improve the safety of the locality.

Once again, I would like to thank you for your time and feedback.

Yours sincerely,

Nick Davies, Specialist Services Manager – My Place

Original Consultation

Rat Running Traffic

Following the success of the Manor Junior School, School Street, which improves pupil safety around the school gates, we are aware that residents have concerns of rat running traffic within the wider area. The increase in vehicles combined with excessive speeds are a road safety risk and create an area in which people feel less comfortable walking, wheeling, scooting, and cycling (healthy active travel).

As part of our ongoing commitment to promoting healthy active travel and road safety, we are considering options to reduce the volume of through traffic at peak times (7:00am – 10:00am, Monday to Friday).

One option under consideration is to ban access for all motor vehicles from Longbridge Road into the local residential streets:

  • Westrow Drive
  • Sudbury Road
  • Stratton Drive

The restriction would operate between 7:00am – 10:00am Monday to Friday. This would prevent vehicles cutting through towards Upney Lane during the weekday morning rush hour.

How would this be enforced?

  • To ensure the restrictions are robust and effective they would be enforced by camera control.
  • Vehicles illegally entering the residential area from Longbridge Road will be liable for a Penalty Charge Notice.

What does this mean for residents?

  • Exiting the area would remain unchanged,
  • Entering the area would require residents using Upney Lane not Longbridge Road.

What are the expected benefits?

  • A 52% reduction of vehicles (730 vehicles) turning into the residential area during the morning peak hours from these junctions.
  • Quieter, safer streets in the residential area

Tell us what you think.

We want to know what you think about the proposed change. Please answer our short survey and/or leave a comment (please note we cannot respond to individual queries at this time, however we will consider all submitted comments).
