Barking and Dagenham Public Spaces Protection Orders (PSPOs)
Consultation has concluded
We’re consulting on the future of PSPOs in your local area and we want to hear from you!
PSPOs allow the council to prohibit certain activities in specific areas and tackle antisocial behaviour.
The process of renewing PSPOs includes a consultation period to determine the activities enforced against have a positive effect on the local community. As part of the consultation process, we are looking to engage with residents to complete a short survey giving residents the opportunity to have an input in to the future of PSPOs.
We are also consulting on introducing a new PSPO on Gale Street where Becontree Station is, due to the high number of reports of ASB.
Please note as part of this renewing process, we are consulting about including a ban on unauthorised amplified noise equipment and catcalling (i.e., inappropriate / unwanted sexual comments).
Barking Town Centre PSPO – renewal and addition of new offences.
Heathway PSPO - renewal and addition of new offences.
Broad Street PSPO - renewal and addition of new offences.
Gale Street PSPO – a new PSPO that is currently not in place.
What is a PSPO?
A Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) is a measure introduced by the Antisocial Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014.
It empowers local authorities to address antisocial behaviours in their communities.
It allows councils to prohibit certain activities or require specific actions within defined public areas.
It focuses on the identified problem behaviours rather than targeting individuals or properties (e.g., spitting, aggressive begging).
Breach of a PSPO without a reasonable excuse is considered an offence which means appropriate enforcement action can be taken.
The consultation will close on 30th June 2024.
We would really appreciate it if you could take a few minutes of your time to answer our questions.
We welcome you to complete some, or all, of the surveys below that relate to areas of interest to you.
