Create for Becontree

Consultation has concluded

Create London have asked some of the world’s leading contemporary artists and architects to put forward proposals for a range of new permanent infrastructure projects to be unveiled across the Becontree estate in 2021. We are inviting people who live, work and learn on the Becontree to give us feedback on each of the 12 ambitious proposals, which range from playgrounds, public lighting projects, street furniture, commemorative plaques and ideas for new signage. These projects are funded by London Borough of Barking and Dagenham’s Strategic Community Infrastructure Levy (SCIL) — a tax on new developments which is ring-fenced for improvements to both local and strategic infrastructure that serves an area and its residents.

Your input will help us decide which of these exciting proposals will become a reality as part of the Becontree Centenary celebrations in 2021!

All responses are optional. You are welcome to feedback on as many, or as few ideas as you would like.

All submitted community review responses will go in the draw to receive a £50 Love2Shop voucher, which can be used in your choice of over 150 high street shops. We have a total of 4x £50 vouchers available for the community review. The four winners of the draw will be notified by phone or email at the conclusion of the review period.

The community review of these projects is open from 10am Monday, 17 August until 10am Monday, 14 September, 2020.

More Information:

To celebrate the Centenary of Dagenham’s Becontree Estate in 2021, Create is working with the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham (LBBD), local residents and a range of local and national partners to develop a programme that will mark this important moment. Create is looking to commission a series of public realm improvement projects as part of the 100-year anniversary celebration of the estate. These projects are funded by LBBD’s Strategic Community Infrastructure Levy (SCIL) — a tax on new developments which is ring-fenced for improvements to both local and strategic infrastructure that serves an area and its residents, be that filling in pot-holes, building a new leisure facility or planting a wildflower meadow.

The Coronavirus crisis is making us all acutely aware of the value of community, social connection, green and open spaces and the impact the built environment has on our wellbeing. In this context, these commissions call for imagination, and a rethinking of our relationships to each other and the public realm. This ambitious and inspiring collection of permanent projects are intended to enhance what community infrastructure is and can be. This series of commissions — a playground, signage, lighting, street furniture and plaques — have all been developed through conversations with residents of the Becontree Estate and respond to their priorities for improvements to the public realm. Our aim is for each project to continue to be shaped and refined by local engagement and to connect with wider work across the estate. The commissions will sit within Create’s wider project to mark the Centenary of the Becontree Estate, which will include a documentary, radio programmes, projects with local schools, estate-wide gardening initiatives and an exhibition at the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).
