Let’s talk about vehicle speeds

This consultation has now ended, thank you to everyone who took part.

Next steps: A report on the consultation will be written and presented to Cabinet, who will decide how we proceed. The results will be published and any future proposal will be fully consulted on. Keep an eye on this web page for any updates.

We want to know how you feel about 20mph speed limits

Transport for London (TfL) and the Council are dedicated to improving road safety for all road users. Currently over half of the Borough is already covered by a 20mph limit and these have been shown to have benefits in effectively reducing the frequency and severity of injuries due to road traffic collisions, mainly through reducing traffic speeds.

TfL is keen for us to investigate the value of having a Boroughwide 20mph speed limit but we want to hear your views on this before any options are considered. A proposal for a Boroughwide 20mph speed limit may be put forward if the Barking and Dagenham community is supportive.

Why 20mph?

London, with 13.5 accidents per 1,000 registered vehicles per year, is the least safe region of Great Britain. It is considerably less safe than other built up regions such as Greater Manchester (9.4 accidents) and the West Midlands (7.8 accidents) and lags behind the GB average of 8.2 accidents (2000 data). In 2002 in Greater London, 36,813 road casualties (89% of the total) occurred on roads with a 30mph speed limit. (Source: review of 20mph zones in London Boroughs)

A review of 20mph zones in London Boroughs commissioned by the London Road Safety Unit shows that 20mph zones are an effective way to reduce the frequency and severity of injury accidents mainly through reducing traffic speeds. The number of killed and seriously injured casualties was shown to have reduced by around 57% and the frequency of injury accidents by around 42%.

Many London Boroughs already have Boroughwide 20mph speed limits, resulting in a clear reduction in serious road incident. Lower speeds reduce the number and the severity of collisions. A person is about five times less likely to be fatally injured if hit at 20mph than at 30mph.

How can you get involved?

Please complete our survey to tell us how you feel about a Boroughwide 20mph speed limit.

All the feedback we receive will be analysed and shared with TfL, we will then use it to decide what to do next.
